The colonizers understood the strategic importance of the land tongue where the Pasig River entered Manila Bay.
The fort was demolished in 1574 during the Chinese attack headed by Limahong.
The stone fort was constructed between 1589 and 1592, and after being destroyed by the earthquake of 1645, it was expanded and repaired. Spanish, British, American and Japanese occupation troops used the fort as their headquarters as a jail for men, women, children and soldiers.
The fort was used by the United States after it was destroyed in 1945 during the Battle of Manila.
Up until 1946, when it was given to the Philippine government, the Transportation Corps used it as a depot. Fort Santiago was designated a Shrine of Freedom in 1950, and repair work started that year.
It now serves as a memorial to the WWII casualties and the Filipino people's sacrifices in the fight for freedom.

All that is left of the town following that 1814 eruption is this belfry.
Unlike other tourist destinations, Cagsawa Ruins Park was formed out of a catastrophe hundreds of years ago.
The History of Cagsawa Ruins begins long back in 1724 when it was established by Franciscan friars. But the Mayon Volcano unleashed its most catastrophic eruption to date on February 1st, 1814.
Over 1,200 people, including those who sought safety at the Cagsawa Church, were buried alongside Cagsawa town.
According to Phivolcs, Mayon erupted with "plinian, pyroclastic flows," "volcanic lightning, and lahar."
